Mobile phones: Time to rethink and limit usage

Sir,

With great interest we read an article by Paul et al. entitled "Mobile phones: Time to rethink and limit usage" that is published in the January-March 2015 issue of Indian Journal of Public Health. In this article, the authors have reviewed the adverse health effects of exposure to radiofrequency (RF) radiation emitted from mobile phones. We are writing to express our concern regarding the opinions discussed in the paper. Although exposure to RF radiation emitted from mobile phones is associated with some known detrimental effects, in some special circumstances, these RF radiations can lead to some potentially stimulatory/beneficial effects. Over the past several years, our lab at the Ionizing and Non-ionizing Radiation Protection Research Center (INIRPRC) has performed extensive experiments on the health effects of exposure of animal models and humans to different sources of electromagnetic fields such as cellular phones [1],[2],[3],[4],[5],[6],[7],[8] mobile base stations, [9] mobile phone jammers, [10] laptop computers, [11] radars, [2] dentistry cavitrons, [12] and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). [7],[13],[14],[15],[16],[17]

In a previous paper published by our team "Looking at the other side of the coin: The search for possible biopositive cognitive effects of the exposure to 900 MHz GSM mobile phone radiofrequency radiation" we have previously addressed some positive bioeffects of RF radiation. [18] For example, we have written that the visual reaction time of university students significantly decreases after a 10 min exposure to RF radiation emitted by a mobile phone. [3] Needless to say, a shorter reaction time helps us better respond to different threatening situations by decreasing the probability of human errors and reducing destructive accidents. Furthermore, we have shown that in radar workers, occupational exposure to radar radiations decreases the reaction time. [2] On the other hand, it has been shown that RF radiation emitted by mobile phones may play an important role in protecting against cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease. [19],[20] Recently, we have also shown that mice pre-exposed to RF radiation emitted by a common GSM mobile phone were more resistance to a subsequent Escherichia coli infection. [1] RF-induced resistance against bacterial infections may have very important applications in long-term space missions. [20] Moreover, it has been shown that pre-exposure to RF radiation may induce a significant resistance to lethal doses of gamma rays (a phenomenon that is usually called "survival adaptive response"). [4] We hope that these comments will be useful in obtaining more balanced judgment about the health effects of RF exposures in the future.
