The fourth edition of "Epidemiology and Management For Health Care," popularly known as Dr. P. V. Sathe's (former Director of Medical Education and Research, Maharashtra) book in Public Health professional's circle has been recently published by Vora Medical Publications. When the first edition arrived in 1991, it had become immediately popular among post-graduate students and medical officers in public health as it has filled up the void. There was no such guidance about the management principles and techniques in the health sector through lucid discussions easily available then.
The book is divided into three parts. The first part covers essentials of epidemiology; the second discusses essentials of management; and the third demonstrates applications for better health care. In the field of public health, updation is needed from time to time as the newer policies and program come into practice. When one goes through the book, it is evident that authors have taken efforts for this and the book has become bulkier with addition of another 200 pages with the help of Dr. Prakash Doke (former Director of Health Services, Maharashtra) who has joined as co-author for this edition.
Compared to previous editions, chapters and material on statistical aspects, microbiological support to epidemiology, micro level applications, and education and training have been removed while chapter on management techniques has been improved with examples of application in health field. New material added also includes aspects such as budgeting, organograms of public health administration, enactment of public health importance, annual district health surveys, and obviously the updated health indicators.
Both the authors are renowned teachers and have made the book reading interesting by including the anecdotes and real life examples to illustrate the point under description. Author's outlook has been not only to make a public health professionals more competent but also assertive. Some of the topics covered like self-management, future of health care are unique among the contemporary textbooks. At times, authors become philosophical and attempt to inculcate values which are very much required for the leadership in health care.
recent trend in textbooks is making it more colorful with catchy illustrations, and this aspect definitely lacks in this book. The tables are informative but not enough attractive. Even the text layout is too simple and does not contribute much to stimulate the photographic memory of the readers. The book of this class should not remain behind on this front and hope that it will be taken care of in the next edition.
