Rabindra Niketan Auditorium, Nalban, Sukanta Nagar, Kolkata - 700091, India, 28th September, 2011

It gives me immense pleasure to address the delegates, members, and other esteemed public health professionals, who have gathered here today to celebrate the 56 th Foundation Day Ceremony of the Indian Public Health Association.

I understand that the Indian Public Health Association, a founder member of the World Federation of Public Health Association, with its branches in almost all states in India, has been actively engaged for more than five decades in promotion and advancement of public health in this country. I feel proud to know that this pioneer association was founded in Kolkata at the All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health, Kolkata, which itself is a pioneer public health institute not only in India but also in the whole of South Asia.

I do hope that the partnership between the association and the institute continues toward furthering the cause of public health in the days to come.

With the challenges in health as a development issue facing the country today, I look forward to technical cooperation and meaningful contribution from the association to effectively and efficiently meet these challenges.

We look forward to consultations and interactions regarding relevant plans and policy formulations and implementation. We also seek a strong role of the association in advocacy for health promotion and generating informed public opinion on health and improvement of quality of life for the people of this country.

The unique feature of this association is its multidisciplinary nature, which is the keyword in public health. It thus offers great potential for comprehensive and coordinate responses to emerging communicable and noncommunicable diseases, environmental threats, etc. which continue to threaten our achievements toward health and development goals.

On its 56 th Foundation Day, I wish the organization will continue its work toward fulfillment of its mission - "Healthy people in a health environment" - and expand its activities both in special situations like earthquake or other natural calamities and for the disadvantaged and marginalized groups of people who continue to suffer in this country.

Thank you and my best wishes for the Indian Public Health Association now and always.
