We are grateful to the author for highlighting some key issues raised by our publication.  While we agree with the comments that community medicine training and public health training may have some distinct differences, it is also a matter of fact that there are institutions that offer both these courses simultaneously through the same Department of Community Medicine. While we acknowledge the finer nuances in both disciplines, overall we believe that they have more similarities than dissimilarities. While public health workforce may include a variety of human resources, the community medicine departments typically produce only public health professionals. Therefore, the article stressed only upon master's level public health programs that are offered by community medicine departments.
We agree with the contention that the future road of the discipline, whether moving toward family medicine or toward public health, will be clearer with the passage of time.  But we disagree with the contention that "… Opening the doors to masters of public health courses has certainly challenged the identity of MD Community Medicine, more so when there is scarcity of public health professionals in the country. Masters of Public Health professionals are considered as low-cost alternatives of MD Community Medicine".
A public health professional focuses on population level health.  People from diverse professional backgrounds and academic degrees are engaged in these activities and it is tough to identify and isolate a given set of professional qualifications for the people who are involved in the delivery of public health activities. We believe that the emergence of Masters of Public Health professionals can also be looked upon as an opportunity to supplement the shortage in public health professionals. The master's programs are not only synergistic to community medicine, but also a welcome addition to the public health professionals' community.
